Alaska Airlines: Hubs and Primary Routes

Seattle’s Sea-Tac airport is Alaska’s only true hub, offering flights up and down the West Coast, plus frequencies to Mexico, Hawaii and (of course) Alaska. In February, 2008, Alaska opened what it calls the “airport of the future” in Seattle, eliminating old-style check-in counters in favor of an open layout with 50 self-serve check-in points and more than 50 self-serve bag-check areas.

Alaska also operates focus cities in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Anchorage. LAX and San Francisco offer high frequencies to other West Coast cities, often in competition with Southwest. Portland (and Seattle) offer many regional routes in the Northwest, with many frequently operated by Horizon Air, Alaska’s regional subsidiary. Horizon flies many Q400 turboprops; while many American travelers are initially turned off by the idea of a turboprop, most find the Q400 to be quiet and very comfortable. Alaska’s Anchorage presence offers flights to far-flung locations across Alaska and was the first location to offer the same “airport of the future” layout found in Seattle.
