American Airlines AAdvantage Elite Status

American offers three levels of Elite Status:

Gold membership requires 25,000 flown miles, 25,000 qualifying points or 30 segments in a year. Qualifying points are generally earned at a rate of 1 point per mile, though heavily discounted fares earn .5 while full-fare coach, business class and first class fares earn 1.25 and 1.5 points, respectively. If you fly occasionally, but generally fly in business class, the point system will benefit you tremendously. Flights flown on American, Oneworld partners, and Alaska/Horizon all count toward Elite status.

Gold members receive a 25% mileage bonus on top of the base miles flown. In addition, Gold members receive 4 500-mile upgrade certificates for every 10,000 miles they fly, allowing them to upgrade even on cheaper fares. If you’re traveling on a full-fare coach ticket, upgrades are complimentary in the US, Canada, Caribbean and Central America.

Gold members also receive Ruby level status on Oneworld, offering priority check-in and early boarding.

Platinum membership requires 50,000 flown miles, 50,000 qualifying points or 60 segments in a year. Platinum members receive a 100% bonus on their base flown miles. Other benefits over Gold include first-class check-in and Sapphire status on Oneworld,

Platinum Executive requires 100,000 flown miles or points, and 100 segments. Platinum Executive members get all of the above benefits, plus Emerald status with Oneworld, unlimited full-coach fare domestic, Canadian, Central American and Caribbean upgrades (plus one for a companion), and lounge access.

How to Get Elite Status Without Flying: American offers lifetime Gold status to anyone who has earned 1 million program miles – not flown miles, program miles. Virtually every other program requires so-called butt-in-seat miles for their lifetime status, but American is an exception. And it’s a great exception since they have so many partners. If you have a small business and get the Citibank AAdvantage card, you could charge $10,000 a month to the card, giving you 120,000 miles a year just from that. AAdvantage Dining could give you 12,000 more miles a year. Suddenly, in 7 years you have LIFETIME Gold status. Without doing anything. Not too shabby…

If you can’t get to a million miles, American gives Elite members the opportunity to share Elite status if they hit 75,000 miles. At that level, they can gift Gold status to a friend. Be nice to your fellow American frequent flyers, and you may find yourself in first class.

American Airlines Secret: American flies 757s on a handful of routes to Europe and only sells coach tickets. However, there are a handful of first class seats on each of these planes that are given to Elite flyers. Be sure to ask when booking an American flight to Europe whether you are on an all-coach 757, and if you can get upgraded for free.

Mileage Expiration

Miles expire after 18 months, but there is no excuse for letting your miles disappear. You can extend the life of the miles by either earning more miles or using miles to make a purchase. You can keep your miles simply by buying $20 worth of flowers or donating 500 miles to a charity. That 18 month timeframe may seem daunting, but with the incredible number of AAdvantage partners, you should never let your miles disappear.
